"Needed: Materials to Help Doctor Have More Compassion"

I would like to know about how I can get some information from SHARE for my doctor. He was supportive while my baby was alive (I had a high risk pregnancy) but as soon as our baby died my doctor has seemed uninterested in me. He has turned off his compassion for me. I don't want another one of his patients to feel as abandoned as I do. Maybe some information will help.

Marcia's Thoughts: I am sorry that you have suffered a loss of your precious baby. Know that my thoughts are with you and your family.

It is good that your doctor was very supportive of you as you moved through your high risk pregnancy. It is important to know that a doctor and his office staff will be "there" for you - no matter what your needs or what you ask about.

There is much information about different types of medical care for "difficult" and high risk pregnancies - thanks to the hard work of individual doctors (such as Dr. Collins in LA), groups such as the CDC and March of Dimes, as well as parent supported awareness groups (such as B-Strep, and yes, SHARE Atlanta, etc.). We applaud all of their efforts to limit pregnancy and newborn loss. The more healthy, living babies we bring into this world, the less grieving parents - groups such as SHARE Atlanta have to support.

Your concern is a major concern here at SHARE Atlanta. While many doctors are quick to give the appropriate emotional support to the parent and family who has experienced a pregnancy or newborn loss, I fear, just as many don't know or want to face the grief that such a loss causes.

For eighteen years SHARE Atlanta has provided inservices and written materials to the medical community. Nurses and social workers are most quick to receive this information and encourage grieving, group support, and avenues to reach a point of healing.

We understand that the medical professionals who work with our parents wish for healthy, living children - we want that, too. But, with 28,000 stillbirths per year and one and four miscarriages per pregnancy, death does happen. Support after a loss is a positive choice for a parent and family. It can mean the difference in healing or unresolved grieving - for the rest of a person's life.

A subsequent baby does not heal in and of itself. That is a huge responsiblity to put on that little baby and on a parent.

So, do we have materials? Yes. We have a Professional Packet that describes what SHARE Atlanta offers. We have three brochures and a Survival Kit for parents (medical professionals can offer these to parents).

Our Contact Representatives Coordinator would be very happy to share these with you or your doctor's office. You can find out more about them online.

Contact Representatvies and ordering our Survival Kit and brochures

Click on button to order brochures or call our Contact Representatives Coordinator, at our Information Line, (770)928-9603 and she will return your call.

We are all "healed" bereaved parents and one of our goals is to reach other parents. We work hard to help doctors, nurses, etc. know that we offer a positive resource for healing. Some of us had to work hard to find SHARE Atlanta, and we know what it feels like to think that you are alone on this very difficult journey.

Send us your phone number, and we will call you. Thank you for emailing us and for your concern. Please let us know how we might help you on your walk, too.
