SA's "Walk to Remember"

In September of 2004, just weeks after completing my graduate studies in public health, my sweetie and I discovered that we were pregnant. Though it was a surprise, we embraced the idea of becoming parents. Our dreams and hearts were crushed, however, when on November 3rd our little one came six months too soon. We were never given a medical reason for our baby's death.

In an effort to find comfort and healing in my grief, I joined a local support group named SHARE Atlanta. SHARE Atlanta is a volunteer, parent led mutual support group for bereaved parents who have suffered a pregnancy or newborn loss. It has been through SHARE Atlanta and other avenues that I have experienced growth and healing. In doing so, I am now able to reach out to other hurting moms and dads. SHARE Atlanta has several outreach programs in which I am actively involved.

In an effort to find ways to prevent what happened to us from happening to other couples and families, I now also serve on the March of Dimes Grant Review Committee. The mission of the March of Dimes is not only to prevent birth defects and infant mortality, but also to prevent prematurity. One of the slogans of the current prematurity campaign is to give women their "whole nine months." To me, that means that babies like our Gabriel can stay safely inside their mommies to grow and develop and be born alive, healthy, and in their ninth month. The March of Dimes is generously funding researchers who are diligently searching for solutions to the prematurity problem. Being born eight months, five months, or 2 months too soon is still too soon. It is still prematurity.

SHARE Atlanta has provided me ways to heal and to reach out to help other families.

In loving memory of Gabriel Hunter - Miscarried 9.2004
